There’s no denying that Ranbir Kapoor is a supremely talented actor, but in WAKE UP SID, he proves that he’s amongst the best in the business today. No one could’ve portrayed Sid as effectively as Ranbir has enacted, that’s for sure. This is an award-worthy performance.

Ranbir Kapoor is fabulous, its easily his best performance. In yet another boy-next-door kinda role he excels in every scene, his dialogue delivery and expressions are by far the best of all newcomers. His hair-styling though should have been way better!

Ranbir Kapoor has the charm of Rishi Kapoor and the sexiness of his mother Neetu Kapoor. He uses this potent mix to deadly effect. A natural with any scene, Ranbir walks into this role with the ease of a pro and comes out trumps. Be it when he is enjoying himself out there with his friends, insulting his mother or even keeping up pace with Konkona, he is perfect.

It’s Ranbir Kapoor and him alone who diverts your attention from the film’s little flaws and spellbinds you with an endearing act that is Wake Up Sid’s biggest strength. Using his eyes, his voice, his oddly-pitched laugh and the tiniest of tics to make a flesh-and-blood character out of Sid, Ranbir turns in what is easily one of the year’s most confident and assured performances.

Given the clichéd subject, most importantly, the coolness isn’t fake: something most films pretending to be for or about ‘youth’ don’t quite manage to grasp. You can immediately tell the writer-director (Ayan Mukherjee, a heart-felt debut) has lived though the material. So have the actors. I may not mind living through this again.

Ranbir handles the character’s inner life with the effortlessness of a Sitar maestro twiddling with his instrument’s strings to create a music that takes the audience to a world where the sounds suggest a harmony between art and life. In Wake Up, Sid Ranbir proves once and for all that he’s the future of Hindi cinema.

Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma are rightly cast. No one else could have handled these roles with such dexterity and charm. Ranbir effortlessly fits into the skin of Sid and excels in every scene.

DNA – ***

Wake Up Sid belongs almost entirely to Ranbir Kapoor. In his third film, Kapoor shows the kind of maturity in performance that takes years of experience to achieve. He is a complete natural, perfectly cast and completely believable as Sid. He is the best reason to watch this film.

Ranbir puts in a masterly performance as the goofy, charming boy-man, who is struggling to find his way in the world. Ranbir has a charming vulnerability coupled with a cheeky insouciance that makes him superstar material, the kind of boy who is adored both by the dadi and her granddaughter.

Don’t miss it for its special moments and the brilliance of Ranbir Kapoor. He makes you want to be a Sid and go back to college.

Wake Up Sid is perfectly shot, perfectly put together and perfectly enacted – it’s perfectly enjoyable in a general, generic sense – but it’s also perfectly anonymous.
