Ranbir Kapoor has often indicated that he would like to redefine stardom. Now that he has established himself as an actor-star, RK is eyeing a piece of Hollywood as well.
TOI has learnt that one of the biggest Hollywood studios has signed the actor for their first production in India, which will be co-produced by Picture Shuru Productions, Ranbir and Anurag Basu’s new production house.
A source close to the development revealed: “While the studio has been in touch with other actors regarding venturing into India, they shook hands with Ranbir on Saturday.” Apparently, the deal was sealed after a four-hour meeting between Ronnie Screwvala, Ranbir, Anurag, Siddharth Roy Kapur and others.
“It is a major professional milestone for Ranbir. He is very excited about this project but he is not someone who would like to talk about it,” the source said. The studio in question, Disney, is believed to have already committed to Anurag about their long-term plans regarding the project, Jagga Jasoos. Designed to be a franchise with multiple sequels, there will be graphic novels and games based on RK’s character.
“Anurag is putting everything into this film. UTV will handle pre-production and distribute the movie in India. In September, Ranbir and Anurag will go to Los Angeles to ideate with all the creative units of the studio. The first and the second part of the film will be extensively discussed and the plan is to make it the biggest franchise film ever to come to India. It is expected to go on floors in September 2014,” said the source.
When contacted, Siddharth Roy Kapur, MD Disney UTV, confirmed the story but didn’t divulge any further details.
