Currently he is also busy shooting for Sanjay Dutt’s biopic. The very mention of his co-actor Ranbir Kapoor brings a twinkle to Rawal's eyes and it's fair to conclude that the younger actor has the veteran in thrall with his acting prowess. In fact, Rawal believes that Ranbir is in the same league as Naseeruddin Shah. “An actor is known by his choices and just look at Ranbir’s choices. No one can dare stand in front of him.” He recalls: “When I was acting with Ranbir in the Dutt biopic, I got a feeling which I had experienced when I was acting with Naseer Bhai during Sir 25 years back. There is an actor in front of you to whom you are reacting. The feeling was surreal and it happened after 25 years."

Trust… complete trust. I trust him, he trusts me… it’s blind trust. I don’t think any other actor will trust me as much as Ranbir does. And because he trusts me so much, there’s pressure on me to deliver. I know for sure that nothing — success or failure — is going to come between us. Both of us look forward to going on set and working together… that excitement is still there. Even after making two films, we still want to make more films together. That’s what is special, I think. He compels me to think about him when I am writing a character. But it’s not that we socialise off set. I am an introvert and I don’t really mix around too much. When we are not working with each other, we don’t call each other often. It’s a very strange relationship. We are close, but we aren’t pals. He respects me and there’s a distance too between us. It’s not like the friendship Ranbir shares with Ayan. They are pal-pals.

Working on that film has been an amazing experience because of Rajkumar Hirani, Ranbir Kapoor and the writing of Abhijat Joshi. It is mainly the story of a father and son, and working with Ranbir has been especially a great experience because he is a brilliant actor, very terrific and a unique talent. I have worked with some big names, whose acting capabilities are par excellence, but Ranbir is exceptional. Sometimes we just have to praise some people we have worked with…but I can genuinely tell you that Ranbir is just phenomenal.

Ranbir is the prince of Bollywood. And when someone has nothing to lose or gain, has everything in the world for himself, it shows. He has no ego, no pretensions. He looks deceptively simple, a boy next door, but is super sharp. You cannot fool him. We had adda sessions on the terrace of the Windermere hotel and we chatted about many things. If you can reach out to him, he can be a brother to you, a good friend.

I always tell Ranbir Kapoor that his face is God-gifted. He doesn't have to move his face or change his expressions much, he can just stand there and whatever he has to say is conveyed. For an actor, it is the most difficult thing to do.

It is really amazing. Ranbir’s pretty much there and it’s unbelievable what he’s doing. I feel Ranbir’s one of the best actors we have, and to top that, there’s Raju Hirani.

Hopefully, this time I will create some magic with Ranbir. I am a big admirer of his work. I’ve seen his rushes as Sanjay. No actor of his generation has the same passion to excel, to make every character real and memorable. I’ve been waiting to get to work with Ranbir. Now, I finally have that opportunity.

Ranbir has the ability to be a natural in front of the camera. There is nothing artificial about him. When I watch him on screen, I always feel that he is not acting. And I see this quality only in him among my contemporaries. I am a big Ranbir Kapoor fan.

I haven't started shooting yet, but Raju sir and Ranbir have jammed a lot with Sanjay sir. Ranbir is a cool, chilled-out chap. During workshops, I got to know him better. There is a star-like quality in him, but he has no starry airs. He is a great listener. As an actor, his homework is on-point. We bond well and spend a lot of time around each other. On set, he is focused yet easy going and does not let anything distract him.

I am looking forward to the Sanjay Dutt biopic. I know the script. It's brilliant. So far it is looking really good. Ranbir is outstanding. I have seen few pictures of his look and the older version looks exactly like Sanju, it’s unbelievable. I have also seen this little workshop where Ranbir has spoken in that typical Sanju style. Ranbir is so damn good.
