  • I really admire what Ranbir Kapoor has been able to achieve in five years. He’s in a position today where he’s picking the films that he believes in and they are becoming successful because he’s established his star value. He’s making very brave choices and his performances are all fabulous. I don’t think he’s ever been bad in any movie. What he’s been doing with his recent films is why I admire him even more. For all the young actors today he’s clearly the benchmark. Amongst all of us right now he’s the only one who is competing with the big boys. He’s making the decision for quality films like Barfi and Rockstar and he’s working for the betterment of cinema and most certainly keeping us on our toes.

Ranbir is a person who I can do anything for. He is vulnerable and is honest about his weaknesses with me and is protective about me. There are things for which he will take advice from me, and somewhere he will give. So, for instance, he will tell me, 'Sir, you should stay in a better house. I will look for a better house for you. Don't tell me you can't afford it. How much money are you charging?' He will tell me, 'I will research and tell you how much you should charge.' He feels that if he asks me for advice, I will ultimately tell him what he wanted to do. So, he seeks the reassurance from me to stick to his stance and help him make a choice that is true. He knows that even if a film is not a sure-shot commercially successful film, he wants to do it as it touches his heart. That's his value and interest and what he wants to do and I guess I was the only person who encouraged him to do that. He discusses things to feel better about his choices. Also, he would get stuck and seek advice on his relationships. Likewise, he knows exactly what is happening in my life and will support me in the same way I support him. He is a true well-wisher.

Ranbir is very special. We share a special bond and it is not me only. He is great friends with other directors too. He is easy going, effortless, a team person and surrenders himself completely to the script and the director. He is not too much in love with himself which I think is a rare thing in an actor.

Ranbir Kapoor is the best actor. He's in the league of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. He's in that space and could be the next SRK. What he did in Barfi! was so difficult and there was no room for goof ups. He was so natural. Make him do the most stupid things and it will never look silly because he can turn anything around. He'll always be perfect.

I am shooting for Besharam so director Abhinav Singh Kashyap is going to be my date this Valentine’s Day. Though to me the day means nothing. It’s just a day that greeting card companies have discovered so that they can sell cards and make money. I think if you are in love with someone you can celebrate it every day. Valentine’s Day is just an excuse and that you have to celebrate love on that particular day.

If the audience stick to you and like you, you are on your way to stardom. That’s what has happened with Ranbir Kapoor. When I saw Ranbir deliver in Wake up Sid, I felt he had the making of a star. He started and he took off, and now he’s inching towards that superstardom bracket. He’s been here for five years and he’s already in the Rs 100-crore club. Not only has his repertoire of work been fantastic in terms of acting, but he has also had commercial success. Barfi!, an alternative kind of film, crossing the Rs 100-crore mark just shows he has the eyeballs waiting for him and those eyeballs will give him any movie today. He is at the threshold of mega stardom, and now he has to choose the right films that will take him there. And it’s not because of lineage or nepotism. It has to do with the fact that he is a genius artiste.

Sometime last year, director Anurag Kashyap declared that he could “give his right arm to work with Ranbir Kapoor.” Did that sound like a bit of an exaggeration? Not to those who have been following the 30-year-old actor’s career, which began in 2007 with the convention-defying Saawariya. Read more
