Everyone has an opinion on Ranbir Kapoor. But one opinion is unanimous—that he is the hottest star today. Be it the B-town participants on the Koffee With Karan show, who promptly name him as the most promising actor of the future, or trade pundits who label him as the most saleable actor, or filmmakers who regard him as the most desirable for female fans. A phenomenon called Ranbir Kapoor has certainly swept the industry and the film audience off their feet. So what is it about the young Kapoor which has put him on the top of the popularity charts, and on the wish-list of every filmmaker?

“He was born to act,” is how Siddharth Anand, who has directed him in Bachna Ae Haseeno and Anjaana Anjaani, describes him. “He has a quality that awes the audience. He is one of the few actors who understands the medium and along with Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan understands the nuances a performance requires,” reflects Anand.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra scores him above all the newcomers because of his pluck. “There’s no one to match his spontaneity. He’s an extremely lively actor who can get under the skin of any character. Who can forget the scruffy lover of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani? Wonderfully refreshing!” says Mehra.

On his part, Kapoor, who has inherited a rich legacy, thanks to his parents has always credited his performances to his love for the craft. “I have grown up on films, they are something I eat, sleep and breathe. I love the process of acting,” he had mentioned in an earlier interview.

Kapoor’s draw, it seems, is not just his ability to flesh out his characters with elan and make them real, bringing a lump to the throat as the jilted lover in Saawariya, making every girl’s spirit soar in Ajab.., and livening up a Raajneeti as one of the smashing protagonists. He is also being touted as the next superstar. If Anand says that he awes the audience with his sheer presence, Ramesh Taurani, producer of Ajab… chips in with, “He’s young, he’s enthusiastic and has that X-factor essential for a star. He is well on his way to becoming a superstar.”

However, in this regard, the actor tends to overlook the tag. “It feels good if people think so, but I don’t believe in this superstar stuff. I always think of myself as an actor. If I were to start believing that I am going to be the next superstar and try to behave in that way, it will affect my work,” is Kapoor’s thinking.

But even such astounding success in a span of three years, what is unsettling the actor are the controversies of his affairs with Katrina Kaif, his Rockstar co-star Nargis Fakhri and Anushka Sharma, marring his image, and making him out to be a Casanova. This was evident at an event when the actor requested the media to stop tarnishing his image. “Every day when I open the papers I am linked with one girl or the other. Not only are my parents affected but I also feel terrible about all this. Now I am so scared that I feel that even if I go out with a guy I will be linked with him. If I have someone or I want to marry I will tell the whole world about it. The media must understand that my family and I get affected by these rumours, and this tirade against me should stop,” said Kapoor.

However, filmmakers and trade pundits brush off thoughts that the image will make a dent in his star-status, or affect his work. “On the contrary, Ranbir’s romantic liaisons have made him more desirable among his female fans, and have enhanced his star status,” says Mehra.

The statement is concurred by another trade analyst, Komal Nahata, “If anything, reports about his dating several girls have only added to the charm,” he says. “Actors are beyond all this. Take Salman Khan or even an international actor like Johnny Depp. They have a distinct image and nothing can affect that, even multiple flings,” is Anand’s opinion.

The BRAND Ambassador

Ranbir Kapoor is currently the face of Pepsico, Panasonic India, John Players and Nissan Motors. International brands are known to tinker a lot before deciding who will represent their company. But the actor seems to meet global standards – as a representative from Panasonic India said, “We conducted research and wanted our brand ambassador to meet five dimensions-an established personality, able to create excitement, have a competent personality, be a premium brand himself and should be seasoned. For us, Ranbir Kapoor’s cool and trendy image was a perfect match.”

Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director and CEO, Nissan Motors, concurred, and added, “Ranbir Kapoor acts as a perfect catalyst to communicate brand attributes. He enthralls the Indian customer, bringing them alive through his persona and charm.”

For the current IPL season, Tata Docomo has signed the rising star of Bollywood as its brand ambassador. “We think Tata Docomo is an inspirational brand and so is the charm and personality of Ranbir Kapoor. It’s a great match,” Gurinder Singh Sandhu, Head Corporate Marketing – Tata Teleservices, said.

Brand campaigners are not surprised at the turn of events. “Ranbir has an instant connect with the youth. He is a combination of pedigree, personality and success that attracts brands to him,” social commentator and advertising professional Santosh Desai added.

Ironically, Ranbir’s appeal lies in his uniqueness rather than any macho quality that brands would want to exploit through him. “He is charming and endearing. He is playful and doesn’t take himself too seriously. He’s not very good- looking, neither does he have a killer physique. That’s exactly why the youth identify themselves in him,” Desai added.

Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar also concurs that his non-muscular body and unconventional looks work in his favour. “Ranbir is young and versatile. He’s got a great sense of humour and can laugh at himself. Brands are attracted to him for the pull he has,” he said.

The only aspect now remaining for Ranbir is to become bankable and iconic for brands. As Desai said, “Ranbir is still off-centre. Shah Rukh Khan and Sachin Tendulkar were vital to Pepsico for many years. Ranbir has still to achieve that bankability factor. But that day is not too far off.”

The director of the original S S Rajamouli has been retained for the R 90 crore reboot. With reincarnation as the central theme, it is set in contemporary times and in medieval times as well. It features RK in his first-ever double role. The actor is expected to train in sword-fighting and at least three strains of martial arts for the part.

Ghajini producer Madhu Manthena will produce the Hindi remake. Says an insider, “The Hindi remake required a sinewy yet lean look and a sombre persona and a fantastic actor who could look convincing in both avatars. Ranbir was the only choice for the role. Only he fitted the bill.”

The source continues, “Ranbir was floored by the concept of the warrior in the Mughal dynasty. He has never done a costume drama before. As a child, his favourite film used to be a fantasy film called Rani Aur Lalparee.

Ranbir watched the film umpteen times as a child. He now gets a chance to live out an old-world fantasy.” While Ranbir remained unavailable for comment, producer Madhu says, “At the moment, it is too early to comment.”

The Kapoor scion famous for his high-profile romances topped the survey conducted by the London weekly, Eastern Eye.

“If the women didn’t like me I would feel that something is going wrong, but it feels good. I do understand that the fans I have comprise mainly of women, it feels good to be wanted by so many women,” said the 28-year-old actor.

Meanwhile, Eastern Eye showbiz editor Asjad Nazir, said that the actor claimed the title with a overwhelming margin.

“Usually it is a closely fought contest, where as this year there was one very clear winner. Winning by a large margin is remarkable when you consider the very high profile men who are in the list,” said Asjad.

Ranbir, who made his acting debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s mega-budget film ‘Saanwariya’ has been going strong since his launch and has tasted commercial as well as critical success with films like ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani’, ‘Wake Up Sid’ and ‘Rajneeti’.

Bollywood hunk John Abraham narrowly missed out on the top spot by finishing second. Hrithik Roshan occupied the third spot while R&B star Jay Sean and Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar bagged the fourth and fifth spots.

Others to make it to the top ten included world champion boxer Amir Khan and the highest places new entry is ‘X-Factor’ finalist Zain Malik.

Recently, Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif, rumoured to be romantically involved with Ranbir topped the Eastern Eye’s list of the hottest women in the world, beating off competition from her contemporaries like Freida Pinto and Priyanka Chopra.

A source who was present during filming says, “They were a riot on the show. They were all over each other and if they have a problem, it didn’t show. To convince Johar that they would be just as compatible on screen, they ended up kissing twice!

Karan was totally taken aback by their madness. After they kissed the first time, the host asked them to do it again as they returned from a commercial break. Without hesitation, they embraced each other and broke into another kiss!” Before the shoot, Ranbir had matched dates according to Imran since the latter was in the middle of a shoot. “It didn’t seem like there was any rivalry between the two. Ranbir graciously adjusted his dates for Imran. They were seen joking and having a long conversation before the shoot.”

Good actors or good friends? We’ll never know.

Ranbir Kapoor has also applauded ex girlfriend Deepika Padukone’s decision of not getting rid of the RK tattoo, after being dumped by Ranbir, that she has got done on the nape of the her neck, reportedly for Ranbir, while they were dating each other. “I have had one of the most wonderful relationships with Deepika that lasted for more than two years. It’s brave of her to keep the RK tattoo intact even after we have parted ways,” says Ranbir on the chat show, Koffee with Karan, hosted by Karan Johar. He, along with Imran Khan, feature on the second episode that will air this Sunday on Star World.

But, while Ranbir is busy appreciating Deepika, the latter is taking pot shots at her ex. Deepika and Sonam Kapoor will be the guests for the show’s third episode. In the show Deepika says that there relationship did not work because, “Ranbir is a cheater.” Sonam, too, concurs, “Ranbir is a terrible boyfriend as he can’t remain faithful, but he can be a very good friend.”

Ms. Padukone goes blue in the face denying that she is upset with her ex Ranbir Kapoor after being dumped by him, the Bangalore beauty drops hints all the time that suggest that she’s actually fuming with RK Junior. Sources say that when she was asked by Karan Johar, on his talk show, which product Ranbir should endorse, she said, “Condoms! He uses them so much!”

Other sources, however, claim that the break up happened not because of Ranbir’s philandering nature but because of Deepika’s over-possessive nature. Deepika confirmed it in an interview with MumbaiMirror that she is possessive. She said, “If my man gives me my security, why would I be possessive? Then I wouldn’t ask him where he is, what he is doing or even who he is with. If my partner is doing things, which betray my trust, then I will become possessive. You become possessive only when you know there’s something going wrong, not just for the heck of it. ” But what she didn’t say was what the insider source claimed. “Deepika was insecure and hysterical. Ranbir was upset becauseof her OCDs and claustrophobic behavior. She used to call up continuously and show up at odd hours at his house, clubs, sets, outdoor shoots, his life had become miserable! She asked for it! The ruckus she created at Bhopal on RK’s outdoor shoot is Bollywood’s best kept secrets! She tends to dominate her man and I have been a witness to that! And yeah she was horribly dumped, and no, RK’s not seeing Kats either!” divulges the insider.

So on one side we have Ranbir saying he’s good friends with Deepika even post the breakup, on the other hand we have Deepika taking some below the belt digs at him. Though she did wish him on his birthday on twitter (before you people get excited, no, Ranbir is not on twitter, we wonder who that wish was meant for then) and had claimed that she hadn’t called Ranbir a cheat in her last interview. So this sudden u-turn by Ms. Padukone does make things curious though anxious minds might relate it to her forthcoming movie releases. We are awaiting for a clarification from both on the matter, though it makes for some really crazy fodder for gossip. Did he or did he not cheat, is she or is she not lying? Maybe KWK has the answers!
